Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was better known as Gandhi. He was born October 2, 1869 in Hindu and became famous for his philosophy of nonviolence and Satyagraha ("insistence on truth"). He also started the Indian Independence Movement. His philosophy involved staying passive and not encouraging violence. He supported equality and emancipation of women and others. Gandhi was assassinated January 30, 1948 at the age of 78 in New Delhi, India. He was on the steps of a building where a peace meeting was about to take place. His last words were "Hey... Raam...." which translates to "Oh... God."
